Baker, Josephine

Baker, Josephine
(1906-1975)
singer, dancer, actor, philanthropist Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Josephine Baker first gained notice as a dancer in New York City. During the 1920s, she appeared regularly there at the Cotton Club and other New York night spots. In 1925, she went to Paris and won enormous fame in the production Le Revue nègre and in other revues at the Folies-Bergère and the Casino de Paris. The style of her dance and her songs ("La petite tonkinoise," "J'ai deux amours") enhanced her international reputation as she introduced her black American art style to European audiences. Settling permanently in Paris, Josephine Baker became a French citizen in 1937. She played an active role in the resistance (1939-45) and, later, in the spirit of inclusiveness, adopted and supported several children of diverse racial backgrounds.
